I've been involved in many new business pitches over the years from global industry giants like Xfinity and Hyundai to Sprint Wireless. Interestingly enough,my first pitch opportunity came in the form of a phone call while working in the stockroom at Crate & Barrel. Without any “formal” ad agency experience. BART's Director of Marketing was impressed with the award winning campaign we designed for the AIDS Emergency Fund featured inside BART stations and trains.
“Hello, umm Gary? “Ya this is Gary”. “We'd like your company to pitch an anti-graffiti campaign " Ya right, picking at the dirt beneath my fingernails. “Go ahead”. I played it cool, but inside I was fist bumping some real ripe shit. I rapidly assembled two of my mates who I had worked alongside, and in four weeks we found ourselves pitching against 7 brick ‘n’ mortar agencies. As we were saying our goodbyes in the parking lot post pitch BART called, awarding us the business along with a half million dollar budget. Ya, like I said, “real ripe shit”.
FAST forward a decade +. The phone rings, but this time it Heaven Hill. The spirits maker was searching for a young, edgy creative agency to launch Sparkle Champagne. Again we landed the business and were tasked with creating the brands identity, crafting strategy, scripts writing, film production through delivery featuring Khloe Kardashian, website build, cross channel digital components and social. Six months later Sparkle ranked #1 in its product category.
